Coming to beaches, venues and iconic locations up and down the coast, Bleach* Festival – the quintessential Gold Coast festival – returns in April to celebrate all things performance and art based. The incredible Gold Coast will once again provide the perfect backdrop for twelve days of nonstop entertainment, festivity and exciting experiences, and this year, Bleach* Festival’s eighth annual event is expected to be the most explosive yet.
Taking place for nearly two weeks and boasting a huge program of live music, theatre, circus, visual art and lots more, Bleach* is the go-to festival in Queensland this 2019, where there’s guaranteed to be something that all will be captivated by. For beachgoers, festival-lovers and artists alike, this dynamic celebration of art and performance – which has attracted more than 470,000 people since its inaugural event in 2012 – is highly entertaining, inspiring and a fantastic chance to engage with likeminded people with a burning passion for culture-driven art and creativity. At the same time, it’s the ideal opportunity to discover regional talent with both famous names as well as new up-and-coming acts coming from afar with something important to say.
Throughout 2019’s Bleach* Festival, there’ll be something exciting to see and enjoy in a different location on the Gold Coast, and with our beachfront Burleigh Heads apartments, you’ll have a prime central location to take it all in. New for 2019, Bleach* will have a designated hub at Burleigh Heads, where an action-packed – and free – program of contemporary dance, live music, children’s workshops and more will take place throughout the whole festival. On top of that, Burleigh will be the home of The Bleach* Club – Bleach* 2019’s official bar on the beach.
Check out just a few events of the exciting 2019 program that you won’t want to miss near Swell Resort on Burleigh Beach.
Tectonic – 17-21 April
Dynamic dance ensemble Dancenorth will bring their mesmerising performances of body movement, sound and sculpture to Burleigh Beach. Thought-provoking and provocative, Tectonic is inspired by erosion and rising sea levels, and will see each dancer bounce, twist and weave across the sand making use of embedded 180-degree balls. It’s highly physical contemporary dance at its rawest with a location that serves its message perfectly.
On This Land We Gather – 17-28 April
Luther Cora and Yugambeh Dancers will deliver energetic cultural dance throughout Bleach* Festival that will honour the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, telling the stories and celebrating the historical culture of the lands that Australians now call home. Make sure not to miss their moving ceremonies that will open and close this year’s festival.
Pyrophone Juggernaut – 17-28 April
Hubbub Music’s Pyrophone Juggernaut is an absorbing display of pyrotechnics and rhythmic music inspired by a 250-year-old experimental musical instrument. Watch in wonder as musicians hit, strike and set their instruments on fire on the deck of a flaming pirate ship – promoting chaos, dance and creativity in one highly entertaining, red-hot performance.
The Cleaners – 26-28 April
Presented by award-winning performance creators Shock Therapy Productions, The Cleaners is part performance, part art installation featuring two cleaners in a living room suspended seven metres above ground. Their task is to keep the room clean by any means possible – below them, however, sits a large slingshot and more than a handful of mud-filled balloons ready to create havoc and inspire meltdowns in a thought-provoking, fully improvised who-knows-what-will-happen artistic spectacle.
Kira Puru – 27 April
Bleach* Festival’s second Saturday will set Burleigh Beach alight with three back-to-back performances from DVNA, Eliza & The Delusions and Newcastle-born pop powerhouse Kira Puru. Marking the penultimate day of Bleach*, this evening of dance-worthy, beach-perfect tunes under the night sky is a must-attend as it starts to bring 2019’s festival to a close.
You Should Be Dancing Minis – 27-28 April
Join Everybody NOW on two energised mornings as they invite dance fanatics of all ages to bust their best groove on Burleigh Beach for You Should Be Dancing Minis. DJ Josephine Colada will spin the sounds as Dance Captain Deluxe leads the moves, providing Bleach* festival-goers the chance to blow off steam and learn a few new and trendy steps along the way – even for those that own two left feet.
Montaigne – 28 April
Closing Bleach* Festival 2019, Art pop Sydney songwriter Montaigne will draw in the crowds for a final star-lit party on Burleigh Beach. An ARIA Award-winner who has been on the Australian music scene since 2014, Montaigne is celebrated nation-wide for her boundary-pushing music that saw her debut album, Glorious Heights, reach the number-four spot on the ARIA Album Chart. Known for her songs “Because I Love You”, “Till It Kills Me”, “What You Mean to Me” and more, Montaigne will no doubt send 2019’s Bleach* Festival off with a bang. Preceding her on the all-day lineup will be dance ceremony On This Land We Gather, neo-soul four-piece Pink Matter, and award-winning electro-pop artist Ella Fence.
