The untamed, natural headland of the Gold Coast provides hikes along the rocky coastline and into the rainforest and the chance to see humpback whales in the winter and spring or birdwing butterflies feasting on jungle nectars in the summer. Burleigh Headland National Park is a must-see on the Gold Coast. Take a break and discover the beaches, coastal heath, creeks, eucalypt seafront, woodland, mangroves, pandanus groves, rainforest, rocky shoreline, and tussock grassland at the headland’s 27-hectare national park.
Sounds amazing right? When was the last time you took a moment to stop and smell the roses? Perhaps it’s time to reconnect with nature if you can’t remember. Why not take advantage of holidaying and exploring the Burleigh Headland National Park whilst staying with us at Swell Resort!
Take on the graded walking routes that provide easy access to the park’s most noteworthy features to see all of these up close. Australian Standards are used to classify each track.
Ocean View Walk, Burleigh Headland National Park
The one-way Ocean View Walk is 1.2 kilometres long and takes around 30 minutes. This road follows the shoreline from Tallebudgera Creek to the southern edge of Burleigh Heads township, curving around the rocky headland. While sitting by the creek at Echo Beach, you can stare at the jumbled masses of six-sided basalt columns. Here’s a local trip. Make sure you bring your swimsuit and a backpack full of refreshments to spend some time in the beautiful Tallebudgera Creek before heading back. You can return via the same path or the Rainforest Circuit and Tumgun Lookout.
Note that a section of Ocean View Walk may be temporarily closed to safeguard tourists before, during, and after heavy weather due to the increased danger of rock falls. See park alerts before visiting for the most up-to-date information on track closures.
The track grade for the Ocean View Walk is 2. It implies that no prior walking experience is required. The surface is hardened or compacted, and there may be a modest hill portion or sections and periodic stairs.
Rainforest Circuit, Burleigh Headland National Park
With a track grade of 3, the Rainforest Circuit is suited for people of all ages and fitness levels. It is advised that you have some walking experience.
The Rainforest Circuit is 2.3 kilometres long and takes about 45 minutes to complete. The majority of this trail is flat, although there is a steep part near Tumgun Lookout in the centre. The overlook is a fantastic site to observe humpback whales splashing off the coast in the winter and spring.
Another local recommendation. It would help if you also visited the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre in addition to these walks. They also provide guided tours that give you a different perspective of the Headland.
Apart from these walks, there are picnic and day-use areas in Burleigh Headland National Park. The park’s northern entrance, along Goodwin Terrace, has a council picnic area and toilets. There are also toilets near the Gold Coast City Council-run car parking entrance.
